Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies who are contracted by the federal government. Also referred to as Medicare Part C, these plans cover the same healthcare services available under Original Medicare, except for hospice care. Many Medicare Advantage plans also include prescription drug coverage. Some Medicare Advantage plans can also include coverage for routine dental, vision, and hearing care.

While there is a monthly premium for Medicare Advantage plans, many private insurance companies choose to offer very affordable or $0 plan premiums in order to compete for your business. These insurers also set guidelines for your deductible, coinsurance, and copays that can help you save on your healthcare costs.

You can enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 – March 31. You can also join a new plan, switch plans, or drop a Medicare Advantage plan during the Open Enrollment period from October 15 – December 7

If you miss the General Enrollment Period, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

While you still are required to pay your Medicare Plan B premiums after obtaining a Medicare Advantage plan, many private insurers offering Medicare Advantage plans offer $0 monthly premiums. The Medicare Giveback Benefit is also available with some Medicare Advantage plans – under plans with this benefit, your plan carrier will pay for some or all of your Part B monthly premium.
